I got my uni package for this semester in the mail the other day. I'm enrolled in a subject on editing, and it looks really good. Unfortunately I think I have to defer, and I'm not sure when - if ever - I'll be able to fit this subject back in.
The thing is, the editing subject would be really quite useful for my actual paying job (as an editor). I imagine I would learn a lot, and aside from that it would give me more credibility. It's a bit like a dilemma I have over the whole Masters degree. I enrolled in a Masters of Writing and Literature. But I could transfer into a Masters in Professional Communications, while doing exactly the same subjects. Which one d'you would look better on my CV for Public Service jobs? But I am very resistant to making the switch.
Still, more skill in editing work will be useful for whatever sort of writing/editing I'm doing, not just the public service stuff.
But to do a subject this semester would not only mean working harder (more) than I want to, it would also rule out doing one next semester - because I'm planning on doing most of the work for that one in this half of the year, ie before the baby is born. And next semester's subject is fiction writing B, which I really need to do before I can do the extended writing subject I want to do next year (equivalent to four units spread over two semesters). And I can't possibly do that subject unless I do it next year - I simply couldn't do it at the same time as working.
Of course, I have yet to establish whether I can get leave without pay for the second half of 2007 - my maternity leave (without pay) only goes until end May 2007 - so it could be a moot point. I guess I should look into that before I make an absolute decision.
Sigh... this juggling of work/study/parenting is really hard. If only I could just quit my job there'd be plenty of time for everything else. Well, enough time anyway. But no money for the mortgage.
