Communing with chickens and other end of winter jobs

Getting out into the very end of winter yesterday to get a few garden chores done (before I fall ill with the nasty bug that's laid into every other member of my family over the past week and a half). This was Liam & Mikaela's first fresh air in a week!

First taking care of a weed tree we've been slackly letting get out of hand, and conveniently thereby creating some small logs of the hugelkultur bed I have in mind.

Both kids had a few goes with the pruning saw till we had the whole thing down and in pieces.

Then there was some communing with chickens to do:

And some lemons to pick...

All in all it was a fun afternoon, with Spring truly on its way. What are you doing for the change of seasons?

What is coming in the wake of the record ice melt... is unlikely to be pleasant

In its last assessment, published in 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change noted that “in some projections, Arctic late-summer sea ice disappears almost entirely by the latter part of the 21st century.”(4) These were the most extreme forecasts in the panel’s range. Some scientists now forecast that the disappearance of Arctic sea ice in late summer could occur in this decade or the next(5,6,7).

As I’ve warned repeatedly, but to little effect, the IPCC’s assessments tend to be conservative. This is unsurprising when you see how many people have to approve them before they are published...

I have no idea what is coming to Europe and North America this winter and next summer, in the wake of the record ice melt, but it’s unlikely to be pleasant.
